H1N1 VACCINE INFORMATION

**************************UPDATE 1/8/2010******************************

We currently have a limited supply of the H1N1 vaccine for all ages!!  We have even received a few preservative free doses! We are administering the vaccines on a first come first serve basis as the distribution of the vaccine has been unpredictable. For children with egg allergy who have already received the first dose at our clinic, we are NOT holding a second dose.

We are accepting appointments for new patients with egg allergy to be tested for the vaccine. The initial testing is very a important step to determine if it is safe for the child to receive the vaccine.  The good news is we have tested over 75 children for the H1N1 vaccine and all have been able to safely receive the vaccine.

We will continue to request additional doses, and we will continue to make them available to our patients. Please check the website for updates on our vaccine supply status.

The H1N1 vaccine is now available at many facilities in Austin.  The vaccine is manufactured similar to the seasonal flu vaccine and is cultured in eggs.  For egg allergic patients, we recommend the same precautions for the H1N1 vaccine as with the seasonal flu vaccine.

If a child can eat a whole egg such as a hard-boiled egg or a scrambled egg with no obvious reaction such as swelling of the face, a skin rash, vomiting or coughing, no special precautions are necessary. Our approach this fall with the seasonal flu vaccine and egg allergic children has been to perform a scratch skin test to a diluted form of the vaccine, the test takes 15 minutes and if it is the negative, the child receives the flu vaccine and is observed for a 20-30 minute waiting period.  This approach has proven to be very successful as more than 50 egg allergic children have been safely immunized this fall.  We will follow the same skin testing procedure for the H1N1 vaccine.
